Party Seating Arrangements: Creative Ways to Seat Your Guests

Creating a fun party seating arrangement can bring excitement to your event. Whether you are planning a wedding or a corporate event, there are several things you can do to create a more unique seating plan than what is most commonly selected. If you want to get people talking, consider a few key options.

Arranging People Based on Age
One of the ways you can create a seating plan is based on age. No, you are not going to group young people together and have a section of seniors. Rather, group people so that each table offers a range of ages. For example, for your wedding seating, couple a senior couple with a younger couple. In doing this, you can spark memories as well as build conversations about life’s journey. To help get people talking, leave a place card on the table with topics to discuss such as like each other’s biggest challenges or most rewarding moments.

Sit People Together from Opposite Industries
When hosting a large-scale seminar, bring people together based on what they don’t have in common. For example, if you are hosting a seminar on technology, grouping people from opposite industries together may seem silly. However, it can allow people to learn new ways of doing things or to discuss industry insight that they do not have. Provide conversation starters here, too. For example, you can create questions for groups to ask each other such as asking about their most effective management style or the technology they’ve used to improve communications, reduce costs, or streamline efficiencies.

Focus on Making New Relationships
Let’s say you are hosting a large corporate event for a franchisor. Instead of sitting all of the people at the event together than belong to the same organization, sit them in pairs with different organizations. Like with the above method, this type of seating arrangement truly opens the door for ideas to flow. As you go through the various activities and lectures, ensure that you incorporate conversation starters. “How do you overcome…” types of statements can get people to open up and problem solve with a fresh take.

Bringing People Together
Whether you are planning a family party or a wedding, sometimes you really do want people to sit down and talk that already know each other well. Consider these tips for making seating arrangements interesting.

  • Make it random. Place each person’s name on a piece of paper and randomly build tables out based on who you draw together.
  • Make it theme based. For example, if you know that there are some serious music lovers in your group of family or friends, create tables based on the music they love. Use vinyl records for table settings.
  • Seat people based on their marital status to encourage conversations.

The good news is there is no wrong way to seat people at your event. Take the time to check out a range of options and be creative overall with your choices. What’s most important is that conversations can take place. Instead of focus on who doesn’t like who, focus instead on sparking conversations or creating tables that can interact with each other to create a special, memorable event.
